Nine pages. It is a full nine pages of reading before Dr. Kathy Koch and Dr. Jeff Myers pull in a single truth from God’s word. Having the audacity to handle a culturally combustible topic like gender, the two span a near half-chapter in their book, “Raising Gender-Confident Kids”, before they even drop a Bible verse.
And, I love it. I absolutely and unequivocally love it.
Not only that, but the book is free for the asking. I love that too. (More to follow on that…)
“Raising Gender-Confident Kids” does not ease into its titular topic. Rather, it grabs readers by their throats and immediately straight arms us with four postures it challenges us to assume within Christ-following families and homes. In so doing, it doesn’t disrespect Scripture by tritely tagging chapter and verse to sweeten the medicine before we’re forced to swallow. When they do pull out God’s word, it’s done with reverential respect, using it as a sword, to hack away at the culturally pervasive lies that so many adolescents are stumbling over.
The book’s premise is powerful: As parents struggling to articulate gender resoluteness for their children, or for students who are seemingly overwhelmed within the media-induced milieu of misdirection, it is not an issue of information. It is an issue of formation. The information heralding the foolishness of gender ambiguity is abundant and persuasive. But, the fact of the matter is that families who have failed with faith formation find themselves floundering fast.
Dr. Kathy Koch is the founder and CEO of Celebrate Kids, an author of eight books on parenting, and a broadly respected advocate for Christian parenting. Dr. Jeff Myers is no stranger to Northwest Christian School. As the president of Summit Ministries, Myers impact through seminars, curriculum, and training on this campus are matchless. Together, these two titans of truth have combined to write what I believe history will record to be the most influential book on parenting through gender dysphoria and dysfunction. The book is less than 150 pages and each seems jammed with practical and pragmatic parenting prescriptions.
As mentioned, the two take broad swipes at what they term the seven causes of cultural confusion on gender: (1) ignorance of God’s best, (2) the rapid rise of radical gender ideology, (3) twisted clinicians’ espousing faulty mental health guidance, (4) the manipulation of language, (5) the ideological surrender of educators, (6) the platforming of media deception, and (7) blinded medical professionals. These seven sins have seemingly swept aside one of the scriptural cornerstones of the Genesis creation account: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God, He created them; male and female He created them.”
But, their solution is not for the faint of heart. The two promote a remedy rooted in Biblical worldview and then define five core needs that we must meet within our children. Further, they demonstrate that outside of facilitating forceful faith formation for families, we will flounder. This means church. Discipleship. A genuine faith modeled by parents. The daily discipline of time in God’s word.
Unbelievably, “Raising Gender-Confident Kids” is available from Summit Ministries for free. Yes, it will require that you submit your home address and email address in order to receive the book, but having been the recipient of Summit correspondence for many years, I can assure you that you will find the exchange more than worthwhile.
